Terrestrial RecordsOver and over again I’ve heard Portland band Charmparticles referred to as “shoegazers.” Their latest album, Alive in the Hot Spell, sounds more to me like sky-gazing. While it’s definitely ethereal and subtle, relying heavily on uncomplicated vocals and brooding guitar licks, the effect is more uplifting than you’d expect from three musicians accused of staring at their feet.
While the album doesn’t open any new musical doorways – and might remind you of the summer you spent listening to your bass player boyfriend fiddle with the reverb button on his new amplifier – it doesn’t disappoint. With songs like “Relapse” and “The Magnificent Sky, I Leave and Am High” you’ll find the old doorways of your mind revisited and looking new.
This is an album for the wide expanse of the Pacific Northwest highways, driving and feeling like you’re flying. It’s springtime and there’s a lot to leave behind. Keep the windows down. Let your friend put her feet on the dash.
