+|'me'S-pace

By Christine Wertheim
Les Figues Press

When the book arrived I had no idea what to make of it. It is this red, rectangular book with seemingly random pages of letters and bits of paragraphs. After flipping through, I became intrigued with the book and read it quickly. After reading it, I concluded that I had no clue if what I had read made any since or if I had simply read too fast to understand it. I decided to re-read it, stopping between chapters to take notes, and had a better time.

This book covers the topic of literal poetics. It is a dissection of our written language, where the sentence is not only interpreted, but the word and letters involved in making the sentences are taken for their individual meanings also. Components of the phrase “time space” are ripped bare or chopped up, exposing the general components that make up the meaning of each word and extracting it to create an individual meaning. It pushes the idea that authors have one interpretation of literature while the readers take it to a whole new field. Overall, it compares descriptions of the material world to a psycholinguistic one.

For those of us who need a dictionary, psycholinguistics is language study in relation to the psychological factors that control recognition. It’s like back in elementary school when the teachers told students to sound out a word or at a spelling bee where a word is used in context to figure out how it is spelt and what it means.

Language play is a fun field to read into and challenges people with what they read or even with what they write. According to the publisher’s website, +'me'S-pace is the first book of two that will mix into a bigger project, titled “For Love Alone,” written by Christina Stead. After reading into the start of this series, I’m interested in seeing this project through to its end. I recommend this book to anyone who likes research or dissecting literature - just read slowly, take notes, and absorb as much as you can.
